Version 1. This is a separate decision from the terms, and you can use the journal either way.
The model runs on your iPhone unless you choose Apple's cloud model
Apple's on-device model is part of iOS, and with it your writing is processed by your own phone.
With the on-device model, your writing stays on your iPhone
It is not sent to Merorme, to Apple or to anyone else, and if your phone is in aeroplane mode the model still works — with one exception, written on the reply itself (Answered by Apple's cloud model · only your question was sent): a question about the world, such as who sang a song or what happened on a date, that holds nothing of your journal and that the model on your iPhone does not know is sent alone, with today's date, to Apple's cloud model (Private Cloud Compute) to be answered. Nothing else of your journal goes with it, and nothing is sent to us.
Apple's cloud model writes the replies only if you choose it
On the page that turns replies on, where it is marked as writing better replies, or in You → Replies at any time, you can choose Apple's larger model, which runs on Apple's servers — Private Cloud Compute. While it is chosen, what you write, what the journal gives the reply with it and a photograph the reply looks at are sent to Apple for that reply, and what the journal keeps or follows up from an entry is chosen there too. Apple states that Private Cloud Compute uses that data only to do what was asked, keeps it only until the answer is returned, and never makes it available to Apple, its staff included. Nothing is sent to us. It needs a connection and Apple sets a daily limit. Choose the on-device model and all of it happens on your iPhone again.
Your health data is never used
Not in any form, not at any time. Steps, sleep, heart rate and everything else your devices record stay where they are and are never given to the model — not even a summary of them.
What the model does
It reads what you write so it can reply to you, and it picks out the people, places and things you mention so you can find them later. It never decides something about you that you did not say.
You can say no
The journal works without this. You write, it saves, you search, you read it back. You will not be asked again, and you can change your mind in Settings.
Replies off is a journal on paper
What you write while replies are off stays unanswered, even after you turn them back on.
Availability
Apple's on-device model needs a recent iPhone with Apple Intelligence turned on. If yours does not have it, the journal still works — you simply will not get replies.
